Grahni in Ayurveda is defined as the motility disorder, which involves the gastro-intestinal tract. In Ayurveda, Grahni is one among the Astamahagadas (8 major diseases). This disease condition is also known as irritable bowel syndrome. These are extremely dangerous and are difficult to treat.

The major symptoms of Grahni are given below.

2. Pitta grahani – Diarrhea
3. Kapha grahani – Dysentery
4. Tridosha grahani – Complex IBS

According to the literature, there are two important types of Grahani

1. Samgraha grahani
2. Ghatiyanthra grahani

Corelation of Ulcerative Colitis with Raktatisaar

Atisaar in Ayurveda is known as the pradhan Vyadhi (the major ailment). Diarrhea or Atisaar is actually a lakshan of several diseases. When large quantity of liquid is passed through the anal region, the condition is called atisaar. The various types are:

• Charak – Pitta, Vata, Kappa, Shokaj, Sannipat, Bhayaj
• Vagbhat – Pitta, Vata, Kappa, Shokaj, Sannipat, Bhayaj
• Sushruta – Pitta, Vata, Kappa, Shokaj, Sannipat, Bhayaj

Individuals with pitta atisaar tend to develop raktatisaar if they fail to follow pathya vihar and ahaar. Raktatisaar occurs when pitta atisaar gets vitiated again.

Common Causes of Raktatisaar

Some of the important causes of Raktatisaar are given below.

• Consumption of hot and spicy food
• Anxiety
• Stress
• Heredity
• Weak body immune system

Raktatisaar in modern day science is known as Ulcerative Colitis.

Treatment for Raktatisaar in Ayurveda
