Rainy season; means lots of drizzling, showers, green coloured earth, rainbow and many more. All these things makes us very excited, as everyone likes to dance in rain and eat spicy, crunchy snacks. As everything has two phases; positive and negative similarly this very season also accompanies the two. If seen in worst phase, rainy season brings a handful of diseases and several allergies with it. Among all the diseases; mosquito disease is most common and in this ‘Dengue’ is the most common.

How mosquitoes spread disease?

Mosquitoes are the small; parasite insect which is found in contaminated places like ditch, gutter, garbage place, pond etc. These are also found in houses which is not clean or is situated at some dirty surroundings.Mostly, mosquitoes are found in damp regions and around country place.As flies and bees, mosquitoes are also very small. They have a beak kind of needle in front of mouth by which they suck blood. It is also called ‘macchar’ in Hindi. They are also found in different varieties. Commonly, normal mosquitoes are not so harmful but many varieties are specialised to spread diseases. Those are found with some peculiar characteristic in body as with some stripes on body and so on. Now, lets move to our concerned topic which is “Dengue”.

Dengue or Dengue fever is also called ‘breakbone fever’. It is a mosquito-borne disease which is spread by mosquito variety called ‘Aedes aegypti’. This mosquito has some white linings on the body. While sucking the blood from human host it also transfers viral agents to the body. This very virus is found in 5 different types DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. It has been identified that this very mosquito typically bite during the day. Apart from humans, it also attacks primates. They takes blood meal from the host suffering from Dengue. Dengue is prevalent throughout the tropical and subtropical areas. International Anti-Dengue day is observed in June 15th of every year.

Signs and Symptoms of Dengue:-

  • High and upgraded fever
  • Pain in eyes
  • Weakness and Fatigue
  • Rashes on upper abdominal area
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Muscle pain
  • Discolouration of skin to pale yellow
  • Dehydration and unquenched thirst
  • Lower count of blood platelets

Mode of Transmission:-

As discussed above, Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease which is spread through Aedes mosquito. Dengue is a serious infection, specially among children. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is spread from human-to-human by the bite of mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus.

The dengue virus belongs to a group known as Flavivirus and can be typically divided into four serotypes; DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4; which are closely related but differ in their antigens.
The developing stages of Dengue is closely related as Malaria.

The diagnosis of dengue is typically made clinically, on the basis of reported symptoms and physical examination. Diagnosis can also be carried out with laboratory examinations of cell cultures, nucleic acid detection, specific antibodies etc. The diagnosis process should be carried out within a week of fever with listed symptoms.

Treatment:-

Well, as this very disease is viral in nature so there is no known antiviral drugs or injections specific for Dengue. But it is treated with plenty of supported care and antibiotics. If talking about vaccine, then presently there is no vaccine available for Dengue fever.

The fever can be treated with antipyretic drugs and the body ache can be treated with analgesics. Drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as it can even lead to haemorrhage.

Natural home remedies can also be applied for the treatment using kiwi fruit and other which increases the platelet count.

Prevention for Dengue:-

  • Keep in mind, Dengue pathogen is majorly found in clear deposited water. So, firstly keep away all deposited water even if it is clean.
  • Use long-sleeved clothes and mosquito repellent before going out; this precaution must be used during rainy season.
  • As a fact, mosquitoes are attracted with dark-coloured cloths and surroundings. So, try to use light ad bright coloured clothes and keep your surroundings lighted.
  • Use mosquitoes net or any appliance which keeps away mosquitoes.
  • Keep your surroundings clean and free from dampness and dirt.
  • Sprinkle kerosene or bleaching powder in damp pits; so that no such disease can attack you.

Guys, in the present date till rainy season is finished; Dengue fever is really risky! Keep yourself protected, so that you can enjoy the monsoon with full happiness.
