Introduction to Disease:-
Disease is a vast topic to discuss about; simply, it is made from two words; Dis=Lack of; Ease=Comfort. In the combine form, it means ‘Lack of comfort’. Disease is a state of deranged functioning of body that results from an infection, defective diet, heredity, environment or mental disturbance.
The pathogen, disturbance, substance, force or reason which causes a disease is known as disease agent. Earlier, when there was the period of our ancestors; thing called disease was rarely seen. Simply, we can call it the miracle of nature or the carefulness of individuals.
Well, learning about diseases; now lets move to our concerned point which is Cancer. Firstly we will get to know what is cancer; its descriptions and then Ayurvedic treatment-
What is Cancer?
Cancer is made from a Greek word ‘Karkinos’ which means tumour or crab. It is a disease characterized by breaking down of regulatory mechanisms of normal cells, uncontrolled division of cells and the movement of proliferating cells to other parts of the body. Cancer is more common in elderly persons though its initiation begins at quite early age.
Types of Cancer:-
On the basis of tissue affected, some 200 clinically distinct cancers are recognised. There are many types of cancers depicting to specific organs like lungs, kidneys, brain, liver, intestines etc. However, all the types are recognised under four types that are listed below.
They are cancers of epithelial tissues like skin, glands and epithelial lining of internal organs like mucus membrane, pancreas, stomach, throat, cervix etc. All around the cancers; carcinomas account for nearly 85% of all tumours.
Melanomas are the kinds of tumours arising from melanocytes of the skin and other organs like mucosal melanoma, nodular melanoma, superficial spreading melanoma etc.
They are the cancerous growths of mesodermal tissues like bones, cartilages, fat etc. In human beings, sarcomas constitute only one percent of all tumours like osteoma which is cancer of bone, lipoma cancer of adipose tissue and so on.
4. Lymphomas or Leukemias:-
Lymphomas are cancers of hematopoietic cells. In leukemia there is a very high increase in number of leucocytes 20,000 to 1000,000/mm³. Immature stem cells also occur in this. Leukemia is also called blood cancer.
Leucocytes may enter various body parts causing damage and internal bleeding. In lymphomas, there is excessive growth of lymph nodes, spleen and other lymphoid tissues also called Hodgkin’s disease.
What is the difference between Cancer cells and normal cells?
We all know, every minute thousands of our body cells sheds which is replaced by new and healthy cells. When no dead cells sheds and over it new cells forms or the number of rebuilt cells are far more than those of dead; then it develops as a Tumour.
Normal cells remain adhered to each other. They have definite life span. Both functioning of cells as well as division and differentiation of new cells are highly regulated so that the number of cells in a tissue or an organ of an adult remain almost the same.
Whenever there is a breakdown of any regulatory mechanism, a cell develops the ability to undergo uncontrolled repeated division forming a ‘clone of cells’. Tumours results in pressing of surrounding normal cells and tissues causing discomfort and some disruption of their functioning.
Types of Tumours:-
There are two types of Tumours which are; i Benign and Malignant Tumour.
1. Benign Tumour
- It is a non-cancerous tumour.
- Benign tumour stops growth after reaching a certain size.
- Benign tumour is non-invasive.
- The growth of this kind of tumour is slow.
- It causes a very little or minor damage.
2. Malignant Tumour
- It is called a cancerous tumour.
- Malignant tumour shows indefinite growth.
- It shows metastasis by invading other parts of the body.
- Once started, growth of tumour is rapid.
- It is severe one and causes fatal damage to the body.
Causes of Cancers:-
Doesn’t matters which type of cancer you are suffering from, most of them has the same causative agents and factors responsible. Depending upon their mode and action, carcinogens are of three types.
1. Oncogenic Transformations-
These factors changes the genetic material from non-oncogenic state to oncogenic one like chemicals and radiations.
2. Tumour Promoters-
They are actually co-carcinogens which promote tumour formation from proliferation of cells that have already undergone oncogenic transformation like some growth factors, hormones.
3. Tumour Viruses:-
They are viruses which are suspected of causing cancer through oncogenic transformation. Both DNA and RNA viruses are suspected to do it.
