Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease have some complications in common and others that are specific to each condition.

Complications found in both Conditions may include:

  • Colon cancer– Having inflammatory bowel disease increases your risk of colon cancer. Colon cancer screening guidelines for people without inflammatory bowel diseases call for a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at the age of 50. Ask your doctor whether you need to have this test done sooner & more frequently.
  • Skin, eye and joint inflammation– Problems like eye inflammation, arthritis skin and lesions might occur in this condition.
  • Medication side effects– Certain medications for inflammatory bowel diseases are associated with a small risk of developing certain types of cancers. Corticosteroids can be associated with a risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis and other conditions.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis– In this condition, inflammation causes scars in the bile ducts which will make them narrow and gradually cause liver damage.
  • Blood clots– IBD increases the risk of blood clots in arteries and veins.

Complications of Crohn’s Disease may include:

  • Bowel obstruction–  Crohn’s disease affects the thickness of the intestinal wall. Over time, parts of the bowel can narrow and thicken, which may block the digestive contents flow. You may also require surgical removal of the diseased portion of your bowel.
  • Malnutrition–  Diarrhoea, abdominal pain and abdominal cramping may make it difficult for you to eat or for your intestine to absorb enough nutrients so as to keep you nourished. It’s also common to develop anemia due to iron deficiency or vitamin B12 caused by the disease.
  • Ulcers– Chronic inflammation can lead to open sores or ulcers anywhere in your gastrointestinal tract, including your mouth and anus and in the genital area.
  • Fistulas– Sometimes ulcers can extend completely throughout the intestinal wall, creating  fistula. Fistulas near or around the anal area (perianal) are the most common type. In some cases, a fistula may become infected and leads to an abscess.
  • Anal fissure– This is a small tissue tear that lines the anus or in the skin around the anus where most probably infections can occur. It is often associated with painful bowel movements and can results in perianal fistula.

Complications of Ulcerative Colitis may include:

  1. Toxic megacolonUlcerative colitis may lead the colon to rapidly widen and swell, a serious condition called as toxic megacolon.
