WHAT IS RHEUMATISM?

The term rheumatism used to describe the symptoms such as pain in joints, muscles and surrounding tissues. It refers to the symptom of intense flowing pain that affects the joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles of the body.

The common symptoms associated with rheumatism are pain and inflammation of joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

According to the part affected it is divided into two types:

  • Chronic muscular rheumatism – that affects muscles
  • Chronic articular rheumatism- that affects joints.

As per Ayurveda, rheumatism is known as Amavata.

CAUSES OF RHEUMATISM

The exact cause of rheumatism is not known but it may be due to the genetic and environmental factors.

As per Ayurveda, it may be caused due to the poor digestion of food which causes Ama formation and later gets deposited over joints in the form of toxins.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF RHEUMATISM

Ayurveda is an ancient science of life. It is traditional healing science which used natural herbs and natural remedies to treat different diseases. Rheumatism is an auto immune disorder which is one of complicated disease that affects so many people throughout the world. It can be managed with the help of natural herbs which are helpful to reduce the symptoms like pain, swelling and other symptoms associated with rheumatism. It can be managed with the proper diet and lifestyle.

This is common disease and it is essential to to get rid of the pain and lead a healthy life. It is a hereditary disorder which cannot be completely cured, but symptoms associated with this can be treated with the help of natural herbs without any side effects. There are numerous herbs present in nature which are helpful in the treatment of rheumatism. These herbs are explained below:

1. Nirgundi (Vitex nirgundo):

Nirgundi is a small aromatic herb which is known for its great medicinal value whose flower, fruit and leaves are used for its medicinal properties. It has anti-histamine, anti- inflammatory properties. It is also used as muscle relaxant. It acts as a mild topical analgesic and helps in inducing natural sleep. It is used in the preparation of joint aid plus capsules.

2. Shallaki (Boswellia curcumin):

It is also known as Indian Frankincense. Boswellia is an herb that consists of boswellic acids which can fight against inflammation and helpful in treating arthritis. Boswellia has an anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic action in acute and chronic conditions of inflammation. It prevents the formation of leukotriene which is the main cause of inflammation. It does not have analgesic effect but suppresses inflammation. 3. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera):

Ashwagandha is a natural herb which is considered as nature’s gift to mankind. In Ayurveda, it is known as Rasayana means it has rejuvenating property. It has property to promote physical as well as mental health. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It balances the level of tridosha- vata, Pitta and kapha, specially kapha and vata. It is an amazing herb for keeping the joints healthy. It is useful in treatment of many physical and mental conditions. Generally it is used as health tonic. It enhances the overall immunity. It is one of the important ingredients of Joint Aid Plus, Ashwangandha capsules, Aamvatnatak churna.

4. Sonth (Zingiber officinale):

Commonly it is known as ginger or dry ginger. It is an ancient herb used in Ayurveda which has great medicinal property. In Ayurveda it is considered as digestive fire promoter which helps to maintain digestive problems. It is also one more useful anti-inflammatory herb and very potent analgesic that improves appetite and good for digestive and respiratory system. It is used to reduce joint pain, and inflammation which are symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

5. Guggulu (Comiphora mukul):

Guggulu is most effective herb which has analgesic and anti-inflammatory action. It is a natural remedy to reduce joint pains and swelling. It is a natural source of antioxidants which helps to remove toxins from body. It supports the healthy immune system. It provides good support to the joints. In Ayurveda, it is defined as one of the useful herb for rheumatoid arthritis. It has property that reverses the degenerative effects occurring in bones and joints and relieves pain in arthritis. It is also used in the formulation of joint aid plus capsules.

6. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia):

It is also known as Amrita which means “the root of immortality” because of it medicinal property. It can be consumed in the form of juice, capsules or powder. It has antipyretic, anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in the treatment of chronic fever, rheumatoid arthritis. It helps to balance the three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha. It is also used in the formulation of joint aid plus capsules.

7. Haridra (Curcuma longa):

Commonly it is known as turmeric. It is an extraction of rhizomes of Curcuma longa. It is used over long period because of medicinal properties. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and helpful to treat the Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is useful to balance the tridoshas in body. It is used in the preparation of joint aid plus capsules, aamvatnatak churna.

8. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum):

Commonly it is known as Methi. Fenugreek is an herb that acts as a herbal remedy for Rheumatoid arthritis. As Ayurveda explains that ‘Aama’& ‘Vata’ are responsible in causing joints problem and severe joint pains. It has analgesic and anti-inflammatory action in body. It is useful to control pain due to imbalance of vata in body. It is one of the important ingredient used in the preparation of aamvatnatak churna.

9. Suranjan – Autumn Crocus (Colchicum automnale):

This herb is useful in Rheumatoid Arthritis and also effective to maintain uric acid metabolism. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and analgesic properties. Ayurveda has made this herb useful for painful joints swollen due to imbalance in uric acid metabolism. Due to presence of ‘Colchicine’, it reduces the pain and inflammation in the joints naturally. Found to have great use for rheumatoid arthritis and joint pains due to other reasons.

It is one of the important ingredient used in the preparation of aamvatnatak churna.

10. Gorakhmundi (Rice Field Weed):

It is another valuable herb for normalizing the uric acid metabolism and is as well helpful in managing the painful joints. It is worthwhile in cleansing the system and reducing symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis. It is one of the important ingredients used in the preparation of aamvatnatak churna.
