Daily Regimen: Ayurveda
Have you ever thought about why we are more prone to diseases? Why do we become ill more often? Why is it that almost 1 in 4 people is affected by mental disease at some point in their lives? You can ponder over these several questions but the answer to these all is our lifestyle.
In ancient times people lived long, healthy, and happy lives because they followed daily regimens and protected the environment. Thousands of years old medicinal system, the Ayurveda, also suggests a daily regimen that one should follow daily. In Ayurveda, the daily regimen is Dinacharya.
What is the concept of Dinacharya?
Dinacharya is a Sanskrit word that is composed of two words: Dina (day) and charya ( regimen or activity ). Thus the regimens that are done daily are Dinacharya. Dinacharya plays a crucial role in managing, curing, and preventing diseases as well as helping in cleansing the body and spirit.
Millennial preventive and curative Ayurveda has always emphasized coexisting and connecting with the environment. This is because it is very significant for our body to stay connected with the natural rhythm. According to Ayurveda, our body corresponds according to the phases of the sun and the moon. This natural cycle is known as circadian rhythm. Dinacharya helps in synchronizing with these cycles and helps to attain balance and peace in our lives. On the contrary, disconnection from this circadian rhythm may lead to poor cognitive body functions, sleep and mood disorders, reduced and lethargy day activities, and many lifestyle diseases including diabetes.
How does Dinacharya work?
In a single day, our body changes and works according to the two cycles which are The Sun and The Moon. These cycles are regulated naturally and known as the biological clock circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm regulates all our body functions including hormone production too. This biological clock is controlled by the receptors present in the hypothalamus that react to environmental cues for light and dark.
Aligning with the body’s natural cycles, ayurvedic dinacharya embraces the circadian rhythm. By sticking to a consistent daily routine, we can naturally regulate our biological clock, promoting better health and well-being.
Which activities are included in Dinacharya routine?

Ayurveda suggests several activities under Dinacharya. A few of them are:
Wake up early: Ayurveda suggests waking up before sunrise, around 5 to 6 am, to sync with the sun. This time offers fresh air and helps with better sleep and a balanced body clock.
Be fresh: Splash cold water on your face to wake up and get ready for the day ahead. Ayurveda also suggests ‘Jalneti,’ a technique using a neti pot to clean your sinuses, nasal passages, and mouth.
Maintain good digestion: To aid digestion and remove toxins, Ayurveda recommends starting your day with a cup of warm water. It’s easier on your stomach, so boiled and cooled water to room temperature is advised.
Massaging with oil: Daily body massages with essential oils keep your skin moisturized and prevent dryness. This promotes good blood circulation, leading to a calmer and healthier nervous system.
Yoga and meditation: According to Ayurveda, practicing yoga and meditation in the morning can boost energy and bring peace to the mind. This helps maintain a sense of balance and harmony in the body, which is important for overall health.
Eat a healthy meal: Ayurveda suggests three regular meals a day, with the largest meal at lunchtime. This promotes better digestion and regulates the body’s metabolism. Also, you should never do over-eating and avoid virrudh aahaar ( incompatible food combinations) like white sauce pasta.
Relax, then sleep: Ayurveda suggests relaxing before bed with techniques like deep breathing or meditation. This brings mental peace, relieves stress, and prepares the body for a restful sleep. Spending time with loved ones is also a great way to unwind.
The bottom Line
A healthy daily routine, or Dinacharya, helps balance your body and mind, leading to better decision-making and increased willpower. It enhances overall development—mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Following this routine brings you closer to nature, improves eating habits, and boosts self-belief. You become more capable and perform better, leading to a brighter future filled with positivity and the ability to heal yourself and others.
