What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a female health disorder in which endometrium (cells from the lining of the uterus) start growing outside the uterine cavity. Endometriosis most commonly involves ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining pelvis. In rare case, endometrial tissue may spread beyond pelvic organs.

Ayurvedic outlook

It comes when toxins (ama) accumulate in tissues and starts disrupting the delicate balance of the tissues. According to Ayurveda, endometriosis is due to disturbed or altered Vata dosha, mainly Apanavatavikara, is a subtype of Vata dosha which is responsible for the downward elimination of urine, faces, flatus, and child birth and menstruation blood.

HOME REMEDIES FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS:

Here we will discuss few home remedies that are beneficial to manage the endometriosis:

1. FLAXSEEDS

This is an effective natural remedy for endometriosis.It contains anti-oxidants and omega-3 fatty acids which are very helpful to slow down the growth of abnormal endometrial tissue.

How to use

Take the 3 to 4 tablespoons of flaxseeds and soak in one cup of water for whole night. Next morning, strain and drink the water.

2. PELVIC MASSAGE

Massage of the lower abdomen and pelvic area with an essential oil like lavender or sandalwood also helps to get relieve from the pains due to endometriosis.

Note: Do not do it during your menstrual cycle.

3. Hot water bath

Hot water bath therapy is an effective home remedy for managing the symptoms of endometriosis. Taking the hot water bath helps in muscles relaxation.

4. CASTOR OIL

castor oil is an effective remedy for endometriosis, it helps to get rid of excess tissues and toxins. Use of castor oil is quite good during beginning of menstrual cycle if cramps are noticed.

How to use?

Mix few drops of lavender essential oil and 1/4th cup of castor oil. Soak a washed cloth in this mixture, fold it and then heat it in microwave until it is comfortably warm. Place this warm cloth on lower stomach. Put a piece of plastic or hot water bottle on top of cloth. Repeat this process for once or twice a day for 30-60 minutes for 3 days.

Note: Do not use this remedy during menstrual flow.

5. TURMERIC

It contains curcumin which has anti-inflammatory property that helps to manage the symptoms of endometriosis.

How to use?

Boil one teaspoon of turmeric in two cups of water. Drink this solution once daily until you get rid of the problem.

Note: Avoid turmeric if you are taking blood-thinning medications.

6. MIXTURE OF TURMERIC, GINGER POWDER, AND HONEY

Turmeric and ginger has great medicinal properties so it is used in various types of diseases. Turmeric and ginger has anti-inflammatory properties which help to get relief from cramps caused by endometriosis. Honey is natural medicine that helps to enhance the immunity of body. All these ingredients helps to manage the endometriosis.

How to use?

Take one teaspoon of turmeric powder, ginger powder and 2-3 teaspoons of honey. Boil 2 cups of water in bowl and then mix all three ingredients, consume it twice daily for week.

7. SITZ BATH

A contrast hot and cold sitz bath is often recommended by naturopathy practitioners for reducing symptoms of endometriosis. The hot bath will help relax the pelvic muscles, in turn reducing cramping and pain. The cold bath will help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.

How to use?

Fill two bathtubs one with warm water and other with cold water. Add few drops of rosemary essential oil or lavender essential oil to each bath tub and stir well. Sit in tub with hot water up to your waist for 3-5 minutes then sit in the tub of cold water for one minute. Repeat this process for 2-5 round and do this for 3-4 times a week.

Note: Avoid this remedy during menstruation.

8. ALOE VERA

It is natural remedy that stimulates white blood cells of immune system that protect the body and provide energy to fight against body infections. It has calming effect on body by pacifying the pitta dosha. It soothes and cleanses your digestive tract.

9. GINGER

It has Anti-inflammatory herb that helps to reduce the inflammation and relives the menstrual cramps. It also relieves the symptoms associated with Endometriosis like nausea. Apart from this it also helps to clean the liver to remove excess toxins.

How to use?

Make an herbal tea by boiling one tablespoon of grated ginger root in two cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain, add honey and drink two or three cups of this herbal tea daily.

10. CINNAMON

It is one of the popular spice used in Kitchen and it is great natural remedy which is helpful in decongesting the pelvis and improve blood circulation of the body.

You can use it in the form of spice in salad, vegetables, and soups.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

In addition to the above remedies, several lifestyle changes are highly beneficial in the ayurvedic treatment of endometriosis. Some of these changes include:

  • Try to maintain a healthy weight and avoid fatty foods.
  • Take all the necessary steps to reduce stress.
  • Exercise can also be beneficial. Aim for low-impact exercises like walking, swimming and yoga.
  • Aromatherapy can also be practiced. Effective oils for endometriosis are sage, cypress, fennel, bergamot and geranium.
  • Avoid processed and factory-farmed meat along with refined white sugar, white flour, white rice and all kinds of soy products.
  • Do not drink homogenized milk.
  • Try to drink spring water or filtered water.
  • Alcohol should be avoided.
  • Do not smoke.
