Hemorrhoids are clusters of blood vessels in the anus and lower rectum, which is normal vascular structure. Hemorrhoids are termed as piles, it is a commonly occurring condition, when becomes enlarged and painful, manifested by swollen veins located in the anus and lower rectum. Almost three out of four adults can have hemorrhoids from time to time. Hemorrhoids are one of the most common causes of rectal bleeding.
Hemorrhoids can be Internal or External.
- Internal hemorrhoids are located inside the rectum and external hemorrhoids may develop under the skin around the anus.
Etiology of Hemorrhoids
- The veins around anus tend to stretch under pressure and may bulge or swell. Swollen veins (hemorrhoids) can develop from increased pressure in the lower rectum due to Straining during a bowel movement
- The condition of chronic constipation.
- Chronic diarrhea.
- Sitting or standing for long intervals, mainly on the toilet
- Some individuals inherit a tendency to develop hemorrhoids.
- Intake of a low-fiber diet.
- It can happen in pregnant women, as the uterus enlarges, it compresses on the vein in the colon, making it to bulge.
- Anal intercourse

- Hemorrhoids are described by name Arsha, caused by low digestive fire, vitiation of all doshas, specifically of Apana vata. “Apaana vata” is one of the five types of Vata and is located in the testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, umbilicus, thighs, groin, anus, and colon. It has property to regulate the functions such as voiding of urine, normal delivery, and excretion of stool etc.
- Vitiation leads to accumulation of waste products and varicosity of veins in the rectum etc. Continuous traveling in a sitting posture on a hard seat, chronic constipation and pregnancy are prompting factors for this vitiation.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids may include:
- The commonly appearing symptom is painless bleeding at the time of bowel movements, small amounts of bright red blood on your toilet tissue or in the toilet may be noticed.
- The feeling of Itching or irritation in the anal region
- Pain or discomfort due to soreness
- Swelling around the anal region.
- Feces – may leak out unintentionally.
- A lump develop near the anus, which may be sensitive or painful (maybe a thrombosed hemorrhoid)
- Hemorrhoid symptoms generally depend on the location.
Internal hemorrhoids
- Lie inside the rectum, but theses hemorrhoids might not be felt or seen, and seldom causes discomfort. However, straining or irritation while passing stool might damage hemorrhoid’s surface and cause it to bleed.
External hemorrhoids
- These are under the skin around the anus. As the external hemorrhoids get irritated, might result in itching or bleeding.
