Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension
Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension is a condition in which there is an increase in the pressure of the skull without any obvious reason. Its symptoms mimic those of brain tumor, but there is not any presence of tumor. It can occur in children as well as in adults but this condition is mostly found in obese women of child-bearing age.The increased intracranial pressure associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension can also cause swelling of the optic nerve and can result in vision loss.

What are the symptoms of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension?

  •  Headache behind the eyes and worsens with the movement of the eyes.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty in seeing to the side
  • Diplopia (double vision)
  • Seeing light flashes
  • Neck, shoulder and back pain.
  • Blurred or dimmed vision
  • Brief episodes of blindness, lasting only a few seconds and affecting one or both eyes.

What are the Causes of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension?

The exact cause of idiopathic intracranial hypertension is not known but it may be due to an excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. The brain and spinal cord are surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid, which acts like a cushion to protect the vital tissues from the injury. This fluid is produced in the brain and absorbed in the bloodstream. The problem in the absorption process of fluid may be the reason of intracranial pressure.

Some physicians also believe that many people with idiopathic intracranial hypertension have a stenosis in the brain but studies are going on to determine whether this is an effect or cause of this condition.

Diagnosis and Treatment: This condition can be diagnosed by MRI or CT scan as these tests can rule out other problems that can cause similar symptoms such as tumor or blood clot.

Modern treatment for idiopathic intracranial hypertension includes the prescription of drugs that are prescribed for glaucoma drugs to prevent the eye sight from worsening but there are side effects of such drugs such as fatigue, stomach upset, tingling sensation in fingers, toes and in mouth and kidney stones. Other medications such as diuretics that reduces fluid retention and migraine medications are also prescribed.

According to Ayurveda, all neurological disorders occur due to the imbalance of Vata dosha with the involvement of Pitta dosha. There are various herbs in Ayurveda which help in lowering down the elevated intracranial pressure and also help in keeping the brain tissues healthy.
