Home Remedies for Patients with Kidney Disease

As per Ayurvedic principles, Kidneys are one of the three major vital organs of the human body, two other being the Heart and the Brain. This makes it pretty obvious to understand that the health of our Kidneys is so very important for us. Despite all the advancements in medical science and no matter how much we are striving to improve our quality of life, the rise in kidney failure patients has never been curtailed.
There are multiple reasons as to why certain people get Kidney disease which eventually progresses to kidney failure. Genetic predisposition, dietary and lifestyle mismanagement are just a few common culprits behind this grave condition.

There are numerous methods used today to control kidney failure in patients at various stages of the disease such as peritoneal dialysis, Hemo dialysis and Kidney transplant. Though these are the most common treatment protocols followed by doctors all over the world, as followers and believers of Ayurveda, we do have certain home remedies which can support Kidney failure patients at home and help them maintain their deteriorating health in a very inexpensive and non – invasive way.

Let us have a look at some of the common home remedies for Kidney Failure patients

1. IMPROVING WATER INTAKE:

This applies to people mostly in the early stages of the disease (not for dialysis patients who have fluid restrictions). We often ignore the importance of drinking water in relation to our health. Our body is 70 percent water, which means we need to replenish it at a regular rate so as to prevent dehydration of the cells.
There fore, try drinking at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water daily.

2. SODIUM BICARBONATE:

Our body works at a close to alkaline pH. Therefore, an increase in acidic levels in our body can result in severe dysfunction. Try taking one teaspoon of soda bicarb at night before you go to bed. It can be very beneficial for keeping the overall body healthy and disease free. It can also help prevent urinary tract infections that affect Kidney patients very commonly.

3. GARLIC:

Garlic is one of the most important vegetables with great therapeutic value. A few cloves of Garlic can be taken daily by Kidney patients to prevent any gastro – intestinal symptoms and improve immunity. It also has mild diuretic properties which stimulate the kidneys to function at an optimum level. But the stimulation is only mild which does not harm the kidneys in a negative way.

4. NETTLE LEAF TEA:

It is another very effective home remedy for Kidney patients. Nettle leaf tea is very commonly available and is known for its therapeutic value for Kidneys. Kidney patients at any stage of the disease can take one or two cups of this herbal tea without any problem.

5. ASPARAGUS:

Just like Garlic, Asparagus is also wonderful for Kidney patients. As it is the diet in kidney disease is very restricted. So Asparagus is one of the few things that kidney patients can safely consume. It is also immensely rich in bio chemicals that support the kidneys.

6. CRANBERRY JUICE:

It has been one of the most talked about super foods that everybody wants to eat. Cranberry juice is rich in antioxidants and flavanoids that help prevent free radical damage to the Kidneys and in turn support its function. Kidney patients can include some cranberry juice in their regular diet to support optimum kidney function.

7. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR:

Apple Cider Vinegar is a very effective herbal product for the Kidneys which not only improves Kidney Function but also affects the overall health and wellness. It can be used in the dose of 1 to 2 teaspoon full daily, as a salad dressing or can be taken by just mixing it in a glass of water.

8. OLIVE OIL:

Olive oil is one of the first things to have on your list of daily fat intake. It contains many essential fatty acids that are crucial for organ functioning up to the cellular level. It is not only safe for kidney patients but also adds therapeutic value to their already restricted diet
Take olive oil in the dosage of two to four teaspoon daily in divided doses as a salad dressing or topping over your meal. Avoid heating olive oil and do not use it for cooking.

9. PARSLEY – DANDELION SALAD:

Parsley and Dandelion are both great for Kidney patients, they do not disturb electrolytes and are nourishing at the same time. You can take a few dandelion leaves and some parsley leaves, wash them thoroughly and mix together in a salad bowl. Add a tablespoon of olive oil over the salad and minimal salt (in permissible amount only). It can be your ultimate meal at any time of the day.

10. STAY MOBILE:

Walk for a few minutes daily. It is very important to stay mobile as long as you are in a position to stand up and walk safely. Walking stimulates blood flow to the kidneys which enhances their function. It also improves oxygen levels in the body and allows better coordination of all the organ systems. It is also good for elevating mood and bringing down stress levels in such patients.
