Takayasu Arteritis

Overview:

Takayasu’s Arteritis is a type of granulomatous vasculitis, which means a collection of condition that cause blood vessel inflammation. ‘Arteritis’ is a general term that means inflammation of the blood vessel or arteries. The Takayasu’s arteritis was described by Dr. Mikito Takayasu in 1908, at the Annual Meeting of the Japan Ophthalmology Society.

Takayasu’s Arteritis causes the inflammation of large arteries in the body. It is an inflammatory disease. The blood vessels which become inflamed in Takayasu’s Arteritis is aorta and its branches. This disease is known by other name also such as, Pulseless disease, Aortic arch syndrome.

In Takayasu Arteritis, the inflammation damages the aorta. It is the main artery, that carries blood from our heart to the different parts of the body. Some arteries are also inflamed in Takayasu Arteritis, the pulmonary artery, which supply blood to the lungs and other important arteries branching out from the aorta may also affected by this disease. The ‘subclavian’ arteries, which, supply blood to the arms, the ‘renal’ arteries, which supply blood to the kidneys, the ‘coronary’ arteries which supply blood in the heart, and the ‘carotid‘ arteries in the brain and the head.

Takayasu Arteritis is considered to be an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the affected individual  attacks their own arteries by mistake.

Over a period of time this disease can lead to thickening or blockage and narrowing (stenosis) of the arteries. Sometimes arteries abnormally dilated, the condition is called Aneurysms.
